Keratoconus Disease & Treatment Methods

Keratoconus is an eye condition in which the cornea loses its natural curvature and thins into a conical shape. This change in curvature causes light distortion and impaired vision. Although keratoconus does not cause complete blindness, neglecting it will lead to significant visual impairment. Fortunately, available treatments for keratoconus allow patients to regain a normal lifestyle.

This condition is progressive and typically affects both eyes, though the rate of progression in each eye is often independent of the other.

Causes of the Disease

To date, the exact cause of keratoconus remains unknown. However, studies highlight the role of genetic factors and allergies (such as asthma and eczema). Additionally, wearing ill-fitting contact lenses and excessive eye rubbing have been shown to contribute to the development and progression of keratoconus.

Symptoms of the Disease

One of the primary signs of this condition is an irregular corneal shape, creating a protruding, cone-shaped appearance on the front of the eye. This protrusion and distortion are not easily noticeable in the early stages, which often allows the disease to advance over time.

Diagnosis of Keratoconus

The disease is usually diagnosed in late adolescence or early adulthood (the twenties). Most keratoconus surgical procedures are performed on patients between 20 and 45 years of age.

Treatment of Keratoconus

Several treatment options are available, including:

  • Eyeglasses: Highly beneficial in the early stages to correct myopia and regular astigmatism. As the disease advances, glasses are no longer effective for vision correction.

  • Contact Lenses: Specialized rigid lenses are used to neutralize corneal irregularity and provide clear vision; only 5% to 10% of patients ultimately require corneal transplantation.

  • Surgery (Corneal Transplantation): Corneal transplantation yields highly satisfactory outcomes. Statistics demonstrate a graft survival rate of 98.1% at one year and 97.5% after four years. Click here for more information.
